Whoopi Goldberg recently opened up about a memorable moment from her career—her 1991 Oscar win for Ghost—and why her mother chose not to attend the ceremony.

Despite the significance of the event, Goldberg revealed that her mother didn’t see the Oscars as anything more than a typical night. In a conversation with Variety, Goldberg explained, “My mom thought it was just another awards show. She never let things like that sway her from her routine.”

That night, Goldberg won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Oda Mae Brown, a performance that cemented her place in Hollywood history. However, her mother, Emma, preferred to stay home, a decision that reflected her practical and grounded nature. “She said, ‘You go and have a good time, and I’ll see you later,’” Goldberg recalled. It was a sign of how her mother valued normalcy and stability over glamour and fame.

Goldberg also shared how this mindset has shaped her own life, encouraging her to stay humble and focus on what truly matters. “She was proud of me, but the awards weren’t what made her proud,” she said. Her mother’s down-to-earth attitude continues to influence Goldberg as she navigates life and career.
